What is an Index Fund?

Index Funds are groups of securities that seek to closely track and replicate the results of certain benchmarks. These funds (in particular, Exchange Traded Funds or ETFs) are not traditional mutual funds but are often compared with them for investment purposes. Index funds are passively-managed - they mirror the holdings and design of the index they track - and typically have low administrative expenses and fees.
